I've not been to school today as I agreed last week with Mrs K (deputy head of sixth form) that it would be best if I only did 4 days a week til half term and then we can have a rethink after that. I'm still feeling very tired and so am a bit concerned about how I'll manage in Japan.
So this morning I got a phone call from J (sixth form secretary) asking if I was in school as Mrs M (head of sixth form and leader of Japan trip) needed to see me urgently. I said I wasn't in school and so she said Mrs M would phone me instead. I assumed it would be something to do with the Japan trip. So Mrs M rang and explained that the school couldn't organise insurance for me, so I'd have to sort it out myself. We fly in just over a week so I knew I'd got to get it sorted ASAP. So I left a message on the forum of TransplantKids and decided I'd ring the liver team at hospital B later to ask about who'd insure me (as I knew very few companies will insure small bowel transplant patients).
Later this afternoon school rang again and Mrs M said that the school had sorted my insurance so I didn't need to worry about it! I'm going to find out more when I'm back in school tomorrow as I'm still a bit concerned.
We're also having trouble trying to organise getting my sterile water (as I can't drink normal tap or bottled water) and tablets through customs. It looks like we have to warn them in advance, but we can't find the right contact numbers on the websites. It's getting very frustrating, but I don't want to just leave it til we get to the airport just in case there's a problem with it. Although I do have a letter from my consultant at hospital B explaining what I need to take on the plane with me and why.
Today I spent most of the day relaxing as I felt tired, but also tried to do some work for English. After half term we have individual oral commentaries (IOCs), which count towards our final grades. I'm quite nervous about this as I don't feel comfortable with any of the 4 texts yet, but hopefully I'll take get a chance to revise them over half term in Japan. I've got a mock IOC on Thursday, for which I've been allowed to choose the text (although in the real IOC I won't have a choice - it'll be random). I chose Wuthering Heights through a process of elimination (I can't understand the language in Hamlet, Sylvia Plath's poerty makes no sense at all to me and we've not studied the Orwell Essays yet!). On Thursday I'll be given an extract from the first 8 chapters of Wuthering Heights and then after 20mins preparation I'll have to give a 12min spoken commentary on that extract. I've currently read the first 6 chapters of Wuthering Heights (so just 2 more to go), but don't really understand them. Luckily my friend Claire is an English teacher, so she's emailed me some plot summaries which have helped a bit. I read a lot, but I much prefer modern, contempary novels than classics.
Final part of my medical history will be up tomorrow.

Hugs Molly. My school was shut today and will be shut tomarow too! Love Emma x
ReplyDeleteCool, is that due to snow Emma? My school was shut yesterday because of snow, but opened again today as we've not had any snow since yesterday afternoon. Apparently we might get a few more snow showers towards the end of the week though.

We did have some snow last night, but it was all gone by midday, and wasn't enough to get the day off school :( Then there were a few more snow showers, but none settled. Gonna have to accept I won't be getting a day off because of weather!
ReplyDeleteWith the English work, take a look on the Spark Notes webiste to give you a hand, here's the link to the section on Wuthering Heights: http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/wuthering/ I find them really useful with understand texts. The Hamlet page is here: http://www.sparknotes.com/shakespeare/hamlet/ and something I find great with SparkNotes is there no-fear Shakespeare section, and this is the link to the Hamlet section: http://nfs.sparknotes.com/hamlet/ -- they 'translate' the whole play from Shakespearean language to modern!
Hope these links help you, and you aren't feeling too tired. Becky xxxx
Thanks for the links Becky :) x x
