Braces!

This morning I had my braces fitted at the orthodontist. Having them fitted took around an hour and wasn't too bad, apart from that the lady fitting them spoke very little English, so most of the time I had no idea what was happening. And then when I walked out of the room after just over an hour, one of the bits that had been glued to my teeth fell off! So I had to go back in to get it re glued.

I'm very fed up now though as my braces are very uncomfortable. They feel horribly bulky in my mouth and are irritating the inside of my lips. They don't hurt though, so that's good, although I have been warned they may ache tomorrow.

The most frustrating thing is that I can't chew anything! I have an overbite, so I can either bite to make my front teeth meet or bite to make my back teeth meet. So obviously to eat I bite back to make my back teeth meet so I can chew my food. But due to the metal bits I've got on my teeth, I can't bite back any more, as they get in the way. So I can't chew anything! I tried sandwiches, but couldn't eat them, so for tea I've just had noodles. I cooked them in a nice sauce and then cut them up really small. Then I just sucked them! I'm really concerned about losing any more weight, as if I do then I'll probably have to go back onto enteral feeds, and my eating was going relatively well until this. So I don't know what I'm going to do :(

  1. That's sounds really annoying - I was going to have to have braces, but luckily I didn't have to in the end. What a pain that it might affect your weight - can you try things like soups and yoghurts which you can drink rather than eat for a while, to see if eating becomes easier? If you made the soup yourself, you could try and pack it with as much as possible! Hope it's not hurting too much,

  2. Thanks Becky. I'm going to contact the orthodontist if my eating doesn't improve, to see what they can suggest. I can't eat yoghurts, as most of them have pro-biotics in them which I have to avoid, but I might try soup tomorrow. And I'll email my dietician if things don't improve to ask her advice. I just really want to avoid having to go back on enteral feeds if possible.

Have you seen my previous post, as that's recent too?

  3. How exciting! Did you get to choose coloured bands for them?
Braces take a bit of time to get used to! It took me a while to work out how to eat etc. You'll get used to it soon-my mouth adapted to them pretty quickly. Once you get used to them the only issue is when they tighten them-that can make your mouth ache for a few days-have paracetamol ready!

  4. I didn't get to choose any colours :( The brackets are silver and the wires are silver, but that's ok with me. I'll keep you updated with how it goes.
